Q: Will this system support a canvas backdrop?

I've not installed it yet, but it's supposed to support canvas and it seems strong enough to do so. You'll want to make sure it's installed in such a way in your ceiling that the ceiling can support it and canvas backdrops.

Q: does the mount work with cardboard tubes paper backdrops come with?

Yes? I order sizes 107x36 with mine and they work just fine. Depending on the cardboard you may or may not have to guide the paper up with one hand as you're using the remote just to make sure it rolls back up evenly without a hitch. Usually they do tho.

Q: Is there an alternative to the expensive tubes? I want to hang 107x36 paper but the tubes are like $50 a piece on here. What do y'all use ?

I use 2" pvc with velcro strips to hang mine

I use the 107"x36' paper backgrounds. Very standard roll of paper used in photo studios. Use any color. They work great!
